Purpose of Research Project

In communications, creativity emerges through interaction among individuals such as the creation of common sense or of individual roles in daily life. This research project aims to establish a new research field, the neural information science for communication, through collaboration among researchers in complex mathematical science and the experimental neuroscience fields.

Outline of Research Project

To establish this new research field, we have established three research subfields: “mathematical systems theory,” “interactions among hetero brain systems,” and “interactions among individuals.” In this project, researchers in these three subfields are going to collaborate. In the research field for “mathematical systems theory,” the theory of describing brain dynamics for communication will be established via studies on evolutional systems, random dynamic systems, hybrid systems that can simultaneously treat discrete and continuous variables, and extended dynamic systems based on neuronal entrainment or chaotic itinerancy. In the research field for “interactions among hetero brain systems,” by measuring the brain activity during communication, we will investigate the entrainment of neuronal activities in distributed cortices, and the underlying mechanism of dynamical emergence of the mnemonic function. In the research field for “interactions among individuals,” we will investigate the strategy for communication between humans, humans and non-human primates, humans and robots, or humans and the environment by measuring behavioral and brain activities.

Expected achievements

By uncovering the underlying mechanism of communication based on our project, the followings are expected to be achieved: 1) To provide an opportunity for understanding the impairment of communication, 2) To provide findings based on neuroscience for improving education, 3) To enhance the development of communication robots, 4) To provide an opportunity to understand the underlying mechanisms of innovation.
