TITLE |
Elucidation of the mechanism of communication difficulties in persons with developmental disabilities |
OBJECT |
Persons with developmental disabilities often have difficulties in communication. Especially, individuals with pervasive developmental disorder including autism usually suffer from communication error. But the concept of the communication impairment itself is vague. Also, qualitative impairment in social interaction, which is the essential item for the diagnosis, may be the result of the communication failure. Therefore, we aim to elucidate the mechanism of communication impairment, and to contribute it to the rehabilitation or the social support.
Practically, we observe the communicational behaviors both in autistic patients and controls, and analyze the brain functions, considering the state and individual differences, and then explore the cause the communication failure.

TITLE |
Neural basis of representation of social norm values and its cognitive modulation |
OBJECT |
Our daily decision-making depends on valuation of social norms as well as valuation of goods. While social norms are formed through communication among members of a community and underlie their decisions, the values of social norms are dynamically modulated through the communication at the same time. Using functional neuroimaging, we will uncover the neural basis of representation and modulation of social norm values, which few studies have addressed. |

TITLE |
Behavioral and neurophysiological studies of spontaneous synchronization in monkeys. |
OBJECT |
In social environment, one has to coordinate his or her actions with another in order to establish smooth joint actions. However, in some cases, the coordination has to be achieved rapidly, where intentional coordination might be unsuitable or impossible, and spontaneous coordination might take place. To understand brain mechanisms for the synchronization in details, studies in animal model are required. However, little is known about spontaneous synchronization in animals. This project aims to examine spontaneous behavioral synchronization between two monkeys in a social bonds. Furthermore, the project explores neural mechanisms for establishing the synchronization. |

TITLE |
Neural mechanism of effective communication in neurorehabilitation |
OBJECT |
Establishing good communication between medical staff and patients with neurological disorders based on the relationship of mutual trust is crucial for successful neurorehabilitation. Recently, an international multicenter randomized controlled trial showed that adding feedback information regarding the gait speed to the routine daily rehabilitation promoted recovery of gait function in the subacute state after stroke. In this proposed study, we attempt to reveal how communication with the patients while they are conducting motor tasks influences motor performance and modulates brain activation by using functional MRI and other techniques. |
